Whoever visits the ‘Boekenberg’ in Spijkenisse, is wise to pick up his smartphone or tablet on the market square for the special library. Download the app ‘Museum op de Markt’, and you will have access to what might be the world’s first museum completely built in augmented reality. Through the camera of the app you can see the square as it is, but virtually you can also see historic buildings of the old Spijkenisse, when it wasn’t yet a centre of urban development, but a small and remote country village. The history of Spijkenisse has been lost in the sixties and seventies when the old buildings were demolished, but the municipality got it back to the marketplace in this virtual way. Old farms and houses have been returned to their original place, and they can be seen from all sides.
The museum is only visible virtually; only a few tiles with markers show that something out of the ordinary is happening on this square. A special telescope that is also on the square, shows a part of the experience to people who do not have an adequate phone or no internet connection.
