This presentation centralizes over thirty group portraits from the 17th century. The gigantic paintings from the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum were supplemented by other paintings and objects.
The thread running through the story is the question who those civic guards, and regents were and what their role was in 17th century urban culture. The exhibition gives a face to those men and women, and clarifies how the 17th century mentality led to manners and standards that can still be recognized in our contemporary society.
