For their silver marriage, Groningen-based artists H.W. Mesdag and his wife Sientje Mesdag-Van Houten were given an album with watercolours and drawings by the members of the Dutch Drawing Society. Mesdag framed one of its sheets, Mother love (1881), painted by his second cousin Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema.
In 1919, after H.W. Mesdag’s death, the sheet was auctioned along with other art he owned. Now, after more than 80 years, the Groninger Museum had the opportunity to purchase the sheet and present it together with the rest of the album.
