This retrospective exhibition uses Jan Weissenbruch’s (1822-1880) most beautiful works to show how he positioned himself at the point of intersection between important artistic movements of his time: Romanticism and Realism. The bright light that Weissenbruch poured over his townscapes evokes a subtle but piercing ‘mood’.
Nearly all the places that Weissenbruch painted can be accurately localized. From the inner city of The Hague to the river banks of ‘de lek’, and from ‘de Merwede’ near Dordrecht to the Market in Liège.
