Gainsborough in his own words

Rijksmuseum (National Museum) Twenthe | 20/03/2016 - 24/07/2016

National Museum Twenthe presents the work of English artist Thomas Gainsborough (1727 – 1788) by means of his personal correspondence. This is the first exhibition with Gainsborough’s work in the Netherlands. The remarkably animated letters written by Gainsborough during his life give an intimate and spot-on impression of the character, manner of working, taste and clients of Gainsborough. By showing these letters in relation to his painting, we learn to understand Gainsborough as an unconventional, passionate and creative mind with great love for music and nature. His appreciation for Dutch landscapes are beautifully presented as well. The exhibition shows all aspects of his oeuvre: landscapes, portraits and conversational pieces. There is special attention on the portraits of his family and friends, and his love for music. All his temperament is reflected in his art, where his love for nature and beauty always wins from his critical demeanor.
