Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005) was a prominent member of the CoBrA group and he created one of the most visionary and substantial art projects of post-war art history: New Babylon, that he worked on for almost twenty years.
Because of the increasing automatization in the fifties, Constant sees a new society emerging. Through maquettes, constructions, geographical maps, paintings, drawings, watercolours, graphics, films, texts, lectures and temporary ‘environments’ he visualizes his ideas of that new world. The New Babylonian – a playful, creative and nomadic person – who doesn’t have to work anymore because of absolute automatization, who can travel everywhere and who is free and creative.
