By showing dozens of paintings, drawings and prints, Beauty Rules brings alive the artistic view on the world by the French Gerard de Lairesse. A world view in which beauty is malleable and subjects should be sublimated. De Lairesse speaks up throughout the exhibition, through his treatises in which he established the rational rules for the malleable society.
With this exhibition, the Rijksmuseum Twente aims to point out that the work and artistic view of De Lairesse deserves a prominent place in the canon of Dutch Golden Age art.
