From 23 January 2016, Museum de Fundatie, Zwolle and Castle Het Nijenhuis, Heino/Wijhe, are co-hosting the joint exposition ‘Ans Markus – If I were You.. Her work is the result of a thorough and ruthless introspection, and gives a voice to widespread emotions, of women in particular. With her portrait series Private Pain however, Markus zooms in on men who are carrying worry and pain, where grief inhibits the men from showing their true faces. Between 2013 and 2015, Markus painted youth portraits of among others Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Henry Matisse, Edward Hopper and herself, thereby raising the question if these artists could have apprehended there and then what their art would bring about. Additionally, several portraits of famous Dutch people such as Arjan Ederveen, Job Cohen and John de Mol are on display.
Castle Het Nijenhuis provides a stage for sketches, drawings and smaller paintings and the sculptures that Markus started to make a few years ago.
