Artists and their zodiac sign
Twelve artists and the astonishing influence of their zodiac sign on their life and work.

Capricorn
December 22 – January 19
Jean-Michel Basquiat
After gaining fame with his graffiti work, Jean-Michel Basquiat embodied the traits of a true Capricorn: he kept working hard to gain even more recognition. As a result, renowned artists like Julian Schnabel and Andy Warhol took notice of him. Basquiat’s tragic end and rapid rise to fame are typical of both the art world of the 1980s and the materialistic tendencies of Capricorns.

Aquarius
January 20 – February 18
Barbara Kruger
With their avant-garde fashion sense and strong political beliefs, Aquarians are easily recognizable. The same goes for conceptual artist Barbara Kruger. With famous collages such as Untitled (Your Body is a Battleground) and Untitled (I Shop Therefore I Am), she highlights injustices she observes, raising issues that would otherwise remain unspoken.

Pisces
February 19 – March 20
Elaine De Kooning
As Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac, they have learned the lessons that the previous signs faced. Pisces are the wisest, but also the dreamiest of all the signs. Elaine De Kooning was clearly a Pisces. Her empathy and helpful nature made her a great art critic. Moreover, she developed her own artistic style: figurative portraits that move between realism and abstraction.

Aries
March 21 – April 19
Agnes Martin
Aries is the first zodiac sign, which means they tend to be naïve and headstrong. The complex mix of these traits often leads to incredible, unstoppable talent. Look at Agnes Martin. Stubborn and optimistic, she broke through the sexism of the 1950s and 60s and became one of the most influential artists of abstract expressionism and minimalism.

Taurus
April 20 – May 20
Salvador Dalí
Tauruses love lounging, eating, cuddling, and, in Salvador Dalí’s case, sleeping. In the afternoon, Dalí would place a plate upside down next to his chair, then fall asleep until the key in his hand dropped onto the plate, waking him. This unique form of a power nap allowed Dalí to get back to work with renewed vigor.

Gemini
May 21 – June 20
Paul Gauguin
With Mercury, the planet of communication, as its ruler, Gemini is extremely extroverted, quick-thinking, and full of ideas. When Paul Gauguin left his family to travel to Tahiti, he embodied the less admirable traits of Gemini: restlessness, judgmentalism, and affectation. There are even rumors that it was he who cut off Van Gogh’s ear… with a sword.

Cancer
June 21 – July 22
David Hockney
Cancers, with their seemingly tough exterior, constantly protect their feelings. In David Hockney’s paintings of sunny California, his sensitivity shines through, thanks to his thoughtful color palette and his moving portraits of friends and loved ones. Hockney also stays in close contact with his exes—a typical trait for Cancers, who do not let go of their loved ones.

Leo
July 23 – August 22
Marcel Duchamp
When Duchamp unveiled Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2, he became a sensation, and with his first readymades, he became a spectacle. His unique view of art and his ability to provoke were typical of a Leo. Leos can be consumed by their vanity (when it comes to their hair, parties, and popularity) and love receiving recognition for their creative ideas.

Virgo
August 23 – September 22
Man Ray
Virgos tend to keep their thoughts to themselves while constructively solving problems. Man Ray was drawn to analyzing and distorting language and symbols. In 1922, he created his first Rayographs, photos made without a camera. Later, he used a camera to create surreal images. Both methods align with the critical eye of a Virgo.

Libra
September 23 – October 22
Annie Leibovitz
Whether balancing relationships, choosing a career path, or picking an outfit, Libras overthink everything. It’s no surprise that beloved portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz is a Libra. In every photo, she presents the subject in a clear light and no-nonsense style. Her refined and elegant work is admired by many.

Scorpio
October 23 – November 21
Lee Krasner
At their best, Scorpios are brave and attractive, but at their worst, they can be possessive and vengeful. No matter the setbacks, they always recover, ready to tackle whatever comes their way. Lee Krasner was no different. After the death of her mother and her husband Jackson Pollock, and struggling with sleepless nights, Krasner created some of her most impressive paintings. Her ability to transform pain into new energy is characteristic of the Scorpio.

Sagittarius
November 22 – December 21
Helen Frankenthaler
With her philosophical insights and colorful canvases, Helen Frankenthaler embodies the essence of a Sagittarius. Due to their adventurous and curious nature, Sagittarians are constantly searching for truth, knowledge, and meaning. During family trips, Frankenthaler’s love for landscapes was born, a recurring theme in her work.
