Steve MᶜQueen

Artist, filmmaker and screenwriter Steve McQueen (b. 1969), who lives and works between London and Amsterdam, uses moving image to explore both intimate and collective experience. His films and installations often reduce complex emotions to something strikingly direct. ‘I want to put the public in a situation where everyone becomes acutely sensitive to themselves, to their body and respiration,’ he has said.

That heightened awareness is central to McQueen’s work. The scale of the projection, the sound, the light and even the distance between viewer and screen all matter. You do not simply watch his work – you enter it. In that sense, his films are as much about space and the body as they are about image, giving his practice an almost sculptural quality.
