She showed Frida Kahlo when no one knew her, she regularly visited the studios of Louise Bourgeois and Nancy Spero, and she was a driving force behind the rising star of artist Hilma Af Klint. During Art Rotterdam, See All This speaks with Catherine de Zegher about what has changed (or not) for women in art in recent decades. She also compiles a list of her favorite artists from this edition of Art Rotterdam. Come too!
About Catherine de Zegher
After last year’s success, See All This returns with Pretty Brilliant at Art Rotterdam! This time again with a special guest: Catherine de Zegher. The Belgian De Zegher showed Frida Kahlo when no one knew her yet. She regularly visited the studios of Louise Bourgeois and Nancy Spero, and was a driving force behind the rising star of artist Hilma Af Klint. She also curated the Sydney and Moscow biennials, and served as director of the Drawing Center in New York and Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent.
In her international career, De Zegher has made the visibility of women artists one of her focal points. Back in 1996, she created the legendary exhibition Inside the Visible – an elliptical traverse of 20th century art in, of, and from the feminine, an exhibition that traveled from Boston to London to Perth in Australia. And in 2014 her impressive collection of essays, Women’s work is never done, was published. About what has changed (or not) for women artists in those 25 years, she talks to See All This art magazine in a Q&A at the fair. De Zegher also compiles her favorites from the array of female artists at Art Rotterdam. Want to know which ones? De Zegher and editor-in-chief Nicole Ex will join you on the fair floor for a catchy tour of the various galleries at this 21st edition of Art Rotterdam.
About Pretty Brilliant
With Pretty Brilliant, See All This has been drawing attention to women in the art world by organizing tours and lectures since the publication of “99 Genius Women in Art” (summer 2018). This Q&A with Catherine de Zegher is the follow-up to last year’s successful edition at Art Rotterdam, where we spoke with London-based art collector Valeria Napoleone.
