Kika Notten - Rootmap I

During an artist residency on Vancouver Island, Canada, Kika Notten became increasingly attuned to the intricate connections running through the natural world. Mosses, seaweeds, mushrooms and barnacles, encountered among ancient trees and along the island’s rugged coastline, became the starting point for a new series of works on paper.

In Rootmap I, Notten turns her attention to the mycelium: the vast, finely branching network of fungal threads that remains largely hidden beneath our feet, connecting different forms of life below the surface. Her drawing echoes this unseen world in a dense web of lines, layers and pathways that seem to keep unfolding the longer you look.
