Mundo Mágico (magical world) is an homage to the evocative programme of the gallery Mendes Wood DM in São Paulo, seen through the lens of twelve of its artists. They present a world in which reality is given a twist, allowing the experience of this art to rise above direct perception and become ‘magical’ – a world with a soul. Recurring themes include landscape, identity, memory and mythology, approached from a personal, critical and at times spiritual perspective.
The exhibition gives a central place to Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato (1900-1995), a self-taught artist from Belo Horizonte. His vision of the landscape is highly distinctive: realistic, naïve and suggestive at once, and somewhat detached, meaning that it is never a factual record. His work is exemplary of the sensitive painting that predominates in Mendes Wood DM’s programme.
