Her sparkling, socially engaged and accessible body of work makes Lou Loeber (1894-1983) an exceptional artist within Dutch modern art. Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presents the first museum solo exhibition of her work in 33 years.

Although Loeber experimented extensively with abstraction, she never pursued it as rigorously as her contemporaries Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. She wanted her art to be recognisable, universal and connecting. She used her subjects – interiors, landscapes, still lifes and portraits – to experiment with colour, form and composition. Her search for simplification and harmony ultimately led to her distinctive, colourful and geometric style.
