To mark the centenary of his birth in 2022, The National Gallery is preparing a major retrospective of Lucian Freud. Time for an analysis of his powerful work and image. An image that seems to fit seamlessly into the mold of the twentieth-century stereotype of a macho artist. The work of one of his students, the Portuguese Paula Rego, will soon be on display at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag. Catherine Lampert, a friend of both artists, talks about their relentless work process and the persistent artist image that suits no one. 'If you label me, you deny me.'
