The Aztecs considered the dahlia a sacred flower and used its tubers as food and medicine. The indigenous name of the dahlia in Mexico comes from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. The flower was called Ācocōxōchitl (often written as Acocoxochitl).
Meaning of the name:
• ātl = water
• cocōtl = hollow tube or pipe
• xōchitl = flower
Together, the name means Flower with a hollow water stem. This refers to a special feature of wild dahlias: some species have long, hollow stems. The Aztecs actually used these as water tubes or drinking straws during travel.
