Huis Marseille is a house for contemporary photography with international orientation, located within the Amsterdam Canal District. How do photographers develop a new visual language that is relevant to the artistic nature of photography, that reflects our present moment as well? That question is central to Huis Marseille, and informs the exhibition programme and collection acquisitions. During an age of unmatched popularity of photography, in which the (mass) medium is omnipresent and available to all, photography as an artistic medium is in constant state of flux. The photography presented by Huis Marseille focuses on an artistic visual language that is characterized by a mindset of passionate research, as part of an ongoing investigation into avant-garde innovation. Furthermore, photography at Huis Marseille has social relevance and is closely connected to the changing zeitgeist. Besides the permanent collection, comprised amongst others of photographers like Ryan McGinley, Juul Kraijer and Pieter Hugo, the museum offers a rich and varied exhibition programme which alternates about four times a year.
