More than a hundred ceramic objects are brought together in the exhibition ‘But What Am I Supposed To Wear To The Surface Decoration Ball!’, including works from Picasso and Haring to Jongerius. Inspired by Grayson Perry’s ironic vase, the exhibition celebrates the power of frivolity and decoration.
In contemporary discussions about art, the use of decoration and ornamentation is often portrayed in a less serious light. Grayson Perry’s title for his extravagant vase, But What Am I Supposed To Wear To The Surface Decoration Ball!, is his nod to art criticism and sets the tone for the exhibition. Guided by artists insights about their own work, we are encouraged to think about form, ceramics and decoration.
