Utopias and have captured the imagination for centuries. In Textile Biennial 2025. Interwoven Futures, twenty international artists explore ideal worlds and cautionary doomsday scenarios through innovative and inspiring textile artworks. From vulnerably woven to distinctly colorful, this multifaceted exhibition presents a motley array of works about the social and ecological challenges we face.

Monumentally woven carpets, delicately embroidered traditional fabrics, textile sculptures and intimate video works depict new futures, other world views and our own place in them. Both figurative and abstract, a wide range of textile materials and treatments are on view: wool, silk, cotton, jacquard, macramé, embroidered, woven, tufted, digitally printed and hand-painted.
Oana Clitan, for example, shows a hand-tufted, dystopian version of a future shaped by idealism as well as strict control.

Can the state use art to convey utopian ideology and create myths about urban environments, she wonders. Instead, artist collective The Weedsman seeks to connect with nature, speculating through textile uniforms about the possibilities for a new type of human being who has adapted to a salty environment due to sea level rise. Céline Berger again interweaves personal archival photographs of the commune she grew up in with the labor-intensive macramé technique she learned there. The fabrics raise questions about preached ideals and the lived experience of this alternative way of life.
