Sustainable Ceramics #2

Investigating a Footprint

Keramiekmuseum Princessehof

  • Address:

    Grote Kerkstraat 9,
    8911 DZ Leeuwarden

Ceramics are sustainable, but the production process is not. Therefore the Dutch design duo Lab AIR asks: can we still make this? They examine production through the museum’s collection and present their own Smogware: porcelain glazed with particulate matter collected worldwide – air pollution cast into a tangible form.

In a three-part exhibition series, the Keramiekmuseum Princessehof draws attention to the themes of sustainability, pollution, and art. Part two was created through a collaboration with researchers, activists, residents, and ceramists from the Netherlands, Milan, London, and Delhi. The works of the design duo Lab AIR open the conversation about materials and pollution within the field of ceramics. In Lab AIR’s Smogware collection, the works are glazed with particulate matter, making air pollution visible in a physical form on the ceramics. Through this research and Smogware, the exhibition highlights the initiatives that can and are being taken in the material use of ceramics.
