Sandra Mujinga (1989) transforms the basement space of the Stedelijk into a mysterious twilight zone with Skin to Skin. The otherworldly environment is filled with sound, light, mirrors, and 55 identical sculptures. The presence of these figures feels charged, as if they are silent witnesses to an uncanny or foreboding world.
Inspired by science fiction, Mujinga explores in Skin to Skin what it means to live in a world where one can be digitally dispersed or duplicated. If you exist everywhere, including in digital space, are you still truly seen, or do you become invisible? Light and sound play a key role in Skin to Skin, both are composed by Mujinga herself. The atmosphere of the space is in constant flux, the green light seems to slowly distort reality: skin tones fade, materials take on new textures, and shadows lengthen and contract.
