Fake news and filters are nothing new. In this exhibition you’ll see how 16th- and 17th-century artists such as Pieter Brueghel, Peter Paul Rubens and Lucas Cranach the Elder worked with illusion, seduction and deception in their paintings. With the garden as a playground full of symbolism and hidden messages.

The garden reflects the relationship between humans and their environment, but doesn’t reveal everything. Gardens are depicted as more luxurious and opulent than reality and cities in the background have been erased. It’s not what it seems. Where creation was once central, there’s a shift towards a focus on investigation. The unreliability, concealed or highlighted in the various elements and objects in the gardens, is recognisable in today’s stream of information.
