In recent years, Venezuelan-American artist Marisol (1930–2016) has been making a comeback. Now, the Louisiana presents the first major European exhibition of her work. Known for her painted and carved wooden sculptures of human figures, Marisol was once dubbed the Queen of Pop – alongside her friend ‘King of Pop’ Andy Warhol.

Marisol’s world is simultaneously unsettling and vibrant, blending dark humor with an exploration of nearly every facet of daily life. Her intricate creations delve into existential inquiries and carry strong political messages, challenging traditional gender roles and advocating for equality. During the 1960s, Marisol undeniably ranks among the most renowned and acclaimed artists of that era, with her work gracing the cover of TIME Magazine multiple times. Yet, she decides to leave New York and temporarily withdraw from the art scene. Although she returns a few years later and continues to evolve her artistic style until her passing, she never quite regains the spotlight she once commanded.
