Herma appears in countless forms throughout the oeuvre of Man Ray (1890-1976). Beelden aan Zee houses a bronze sculpture of this hermaphroditic figure, which, together with his video works, takes center stage in a new exhibition and embodies Man Ray’s boundary-pushing ideas.
Driven by an unrelenting curiosity and the use of diverse materials and experimental techniques, Man Ray established his name. His artistic home base in Paris brought him into contact with influential avant-garde figures such as Marcel Duchamp. The exhibition at Beelden aan Zee offers visitors a unique insight into the versatility and imagination of Man Ray, both as a sculptor and a filmmaker. This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to experience the full breadth and depth of Man Ray’s artistic legacy and to be moved once again by his revolutionary vision of art and film.
