Jan Mankes (1889-1920) is known for paintings, in which time seems to stand still. A peaceful scene of the people around him, of animals and of nature. He created these works of art in response to the troubled time in which he lived, against the backdrop of the communist revolution, World War I and the fact that the Netherlands had to prepare for war.
Why did Mankes do this? Was it a way to escape misery? Or was there a strategy behind it? In Museum Arnhem you will see that Mankes painted attentively and with great feeling. We also look at his contemporaries and at contemporary artists. How do they seek peace in the restless world around them?
