In Momentum of Light, internationally acclaimed photographer Iwan Baan (NL, 1975) presents a selection of images he captured in 2021 in southern Burkina Faso, documenting the country’s traditional architecture. His photographs reveal how the daily cycle of sunlight is central not only to building practices but also to the rhythm of everyday life.

Driven by his fascination with architecture, Baan approaches his subject with the eye of a documentary photographer. His focus lies less on formal aesthetics and more on the ways in which daily routines – in homes, workshops, and places of worship – are shaped by the searing presence, or the profound absence, of the sun. Momentum of Light, Baan’s first solo museum exhibition in the Netherlands, pays homage to a way of building and living deeply rooted in the synergy between people and nature.
