Reflecting on her spontaneous painting method, Gabriele Münter (1877-1962) once said: ‘It’s like leaping suddenly into deep waters, and I never know beforehand whether I’ll be able to swim. Nearly eighty paintings and photographs will welcome you into the world of German Expressionist.

Into Deep Waters explores Münter’s daring use of bold, vibrant colors as she redefined traditional genres like still life, landscape, and portraiture. Her revolutionary approach presented a striking alternative to the then-emerging trends in abstract art that moved away from recognizable forms. This landmark exhibition centers on the pivotal years from 1908 to 1920, while also highlighting through her later works the artist’s relentless drive for experimentation and innovation. Spanning three Tower galleries, the exhibition will showcase sixty paintings and eighteen photographs, shedding light on Münter’s groundbreaking yet often underappreciated contributions to modern art.
