FOLLY – a Speculative Retelling is the first solo exhibition by Heleen Mineur and the result of extensive research into the history and representation of mental health. ‘Heleen Mineur offers a refreshing perspective on this contemporary subject, which is still burdened by many prejudices. Her work sensitively brings to light what often remains unspoken,’ says Bart Rutten, Artistic Director of the Centraal Museum.

While researching the archives of psychiatric institutions, Mineur discovered that they often lacked the perspectives of the individuals themselves, particularly those of women. FOLLY – which also means ‘madness’ or ‘foolishness’ – is an installation consisting of three parts: a docu-fiction film, a tapestry, and a sculpture. In these works, Mineur weaves the outcomes of her research together with fictional characters and fables, and creates a fever dream. Using a range of documentary filmmaking techniques, she creates a wondrous retelling that makes space for the patient’s perspective, for confusion and wandering thoughts, symbolism, humor, and mourning.
