While his predecessors mainly painted exotic flowers and plants, Floris Verster (1861-1927) radically renewed floral still life with his paintings of simple field flowers and weeds. At Museum De Lakenhal, contemporary artists Annelies Dijkman, Esther Hoogendijk and Seet van Hout enter into dialogue with Verster’s work with green interventions.

Floris Verster (Leiden, 1861-1927) is considered the great innovator of flower still lifes. In his revolutionary flower still lifes, wild flowers and “weeds” shine in all their simplicity. Verster experimented a lot with mirrors and coloured glass plates. This led to magical light and colour effects, giving the modern compositions a mysterious effect. Besides his life-size paintings, early study sketches, drawings and watercolours are also on display.
