The vibrant brushwork of Emily Kam Kngwarray (1910– 1996) weaves together a rich mix of colours, bringing texture, detail, and depth to every painting. Tate presents an extraordinary body of work by the Aboriginal Australian artist, who began painting in her late 70s – works that pay homage to her life experience and deep spiritual connection to her homeland.

Despite starting her artistic journey later in life, Emily quickly established herself as a prolific painter, producing works with a vigor that defied her years. Astonishingly, within just an eight-year career, she created over 3,000 paintings—averaging one per day. This exhibition honors the enduring brilliance of this iconic Australian artist, recognized globally as one of the most influential contemporary painters of the twentieth century. A senior Anmatyerr woman, Kngwarray dedicated her final years wholly to her art, crafting pieces that reflect the profound wisdom and experiences of an extraordinary life.
