What might Surrealism look like today? Six contemporary artists – Emma Talbot, Tai Shani, Monster Chetwynd, Laure Prouvost, Kerstin Brätsch, and Raphaela Vogel – present their contemporary interpretations in dialogue with iconic Surrealist works from the collection.
It has been 100 years since André Breton published his Manifeste du surréalisme, establishing Surrealism as a genre in art. The dreamlike, hallucinatory, and associative visual language that characterised Surrealist works remains deeply relevant in contemporary art. The artists featured in this exhibition create alternative realities in their work to address a world full of uncertainties. Their art focuses on the subconscious, the body and the tangible, and helps to open up discussions around social themes such as gender, identity, feminism, and climate change.
