Bakudengar (Listen to Each Other) has been curated by a Public in Residence. The group collaborates with visual artists, who created new work for the exhibition, with a focus on West Papuan, Moluccan, Minahasan, and Chinese-Indonesian communities.
Following conversations about diaspora and personal connections to the Indonesian archipelago, the artists created their new work. Their installations, drawings, sculptures, and films present perspectives that evoke recognition and wonder, but also create friction and call for action and resistance. Contemporary themes are addressed, including ongoing struggles for freedom, the protection of nature and the environment, the consequences of Dutch colonial rule and later of the New Order, the value of precolonial traditions, the effects of forced displacement, and the significant role of women in the transmission of culture.
