With more than 200 works, the American Photography exhibition highlights the rich and diverse history of photography in the United States. The exhibition depicts the United States through the eyes of American photographers. It shows how photography has penetrated everywhere since its invention in the 19th century; from art, news and advertising to private use.

Over the past few decades, the Rijksmuseum has brought together a collection of American photography. This is the first time the collection has been presented, along with loans from Dutch, European and American collections. Iconic works by photographers such as Sally Mann, Robert Frank, Lisette Model, Nan Goldin, Richard Avedon, Andy Warhol, Paul Strand, Diane Arbus and James Van Der Zee are on display alongside surprising photographs by unknown and anonymous creators.
