Artists at the Frans Hals Museum

The old master could show it on canvas like no other: the sizzling gaze between two lovers. Director Ann Demeester created a meeting between Frans Hals and artists of today, with the exhibition Rendez-Vous at the Frans Hals Museum. Contemporary painters and photographers, curators and art historians – including Koos Breukel, Hans Aarsman, Laurence Aëgerter, Jasper Hagenaar and Birthe Leemeijer – have all been inspired by the old master. In the Frans Hals Museum, they have set up spaces in which they respond to the paintings of the Haarlem virtuoso. On April 22, See All This is organizing an exclusive tour of this exhibition. Koos Breukel, Hans Aarsman, Laurence Aëgerter, Birthe Leemeijer and Jasper Hagenaar will tell us personally about their work and interpretations of Frans Hals.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Photographer Koos Breukel put together a room focusing on several paintings from books by Hals and the story of Hals’ encounter with Van Dyck. The spontaneity in the work, the emotion and the encounter, this is what Breukel refers to in his own work.

Photodetective Hans Aarsman and filmmaker Roy Villevoye, together with twenty medical students and doctors-in-training from the Radboudumc, studied nineteen paintings by Hals and diagnosed those portrayed.

Ten years ago, Laurence Aëgerter began researching two portraits by Frans Hals, “the very finest pendant portraits he ever painted. With her installation at the museum, Aëgerter tells the extraordinary story behind these portraits and the fate of these paintings that were separated in 1886.

Jasper Hagenaar was inspired by a militia painting by Hals, and created a work of exactly the same size. Hagenaar printed out the painting in large format for research. ‘I translated the composition very freely into geometric shapes. In addition, I present variations on Willem Heda and Kees Verwey.’

Under the title Onbegrensde Tuinen, Birthe Leemeijer, artist and horticulturist, launched a project in 2013 in which flowers are given limitless space. This unlimited garden now extends to the courtyard garden of the Frans Hals Museum. And to the garden at the editorial office of See All This!

Fotograaf Koos Breukel stelde een zaal samen waarbij verschillende schilderijen uit boeken van Hals en het verhaal van Hals’ ontmoeting met Van Dyck centraal staan. De spontaniteit in het werk, de emotie en de ontmoeting, daar verwijst Breukel naar in zijn eigen werk.

Fotodetective Hans Aarsman en filmmaker Roy Villevoye hebben samen met twintig medisch studenten en artsen in opleiding van het Radboudumc negentien schilderijen van Hals bestudeerd en de geportretteerden gediagnostiseerd.

Tien jaar geleden begon Laurence Aëgerter met een onderzoek naar twee portretten van Frans Hals, ‘de allermooiste pendantportretten die hij ooit geschilderd heeft.’ Met haar installatie in het museum vertelt Aëgerter het bijzondere verhaal achter deze portretten en het lot van deze schilderijen die in 1886 van elkaar werden gescheiden.

Jasper Hagenaar liet zich inspireren door een schutterstuk van Hals, en maakte een werk van exact hetzelfde formaat. Hagenaar printte het schilderij uit op groot formaat voor onderzoek. ‘Ik vertaalde de compositie heel vrij in geometrische vormen. Daarnaast presenteer ik variaties op Willem Heda en Kees Verwey.’

Onder de noemer Onbegrensde Tuinen heeft Birthe Leemeijer, kunstenaar en hovenier, in 2013 een project opgestart waarin bloemen grenzeloos veel ruimte krijgen. Deze onbegrensde tuin strekt zich nu ook uit naar de binnentuin van het Frans Hals Museum. En naar de tuin bij de redactie van See All This!
