Pots and Pans

Everyday treasures by Gunjan Gupta

Art Room

‘What is India without her pots?’ designer Gunjan Gupta asked herself. ‘It is the timeless appeal of this feminine form known as a symbol of fertility, that lends itself as a storytelling device in a variety of crafts, ranging from wood to earth to the casting to bronze.’ Discover her series of pans and hand-painted ceramics in this Art Room.

In 2019, designer Gunjan Gupta founded her label IKKIS in New Delhi. The name means ‘21’ in Hindi – a number that carries enduring physical and spiritual significance. With IKKIS, Gupta brings a wider community of designers and artisans into view, creating a global body of work rooted in Indian rituals and customs, grounded in heritage yet infused with a sense of playful lightness.

IKKIS designs are celebrated worldwide and feature in both museum and private collections, including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the M+ Museum in Hong Kong.

In this Art Room, you will find the ‘Kadai’ pan, crafted from the renowned black Longpi pottery of Manipur – originally used in rituals and ceremonies, yet also part of everyday life – alongside hand-painted pottery in tantric colours and forms, and kitchen utensils made from wood and clay.

‘Unwrapping her chubby black ceramic pot for my all-black kitchen, I could hardly believe the beauty of this original tool – placed in a ceramic basket with a tea light to keep my one-pan dishes simmering and delicious. It is the piece that centres my table and gathers the energies of my friends, acting as a ritual blessing..’
