OVER CARLIJN KINGMA

ABOUT CARLIJN KINGMA (PICTURE)

Carlijn Kingma (b. 1991) makes drawings that tell stories about our society. Who are we? Where did we come from and where are we going? How can we break with old traditions and face a new, optimistic future? Big words and ideals that she makes insightful in clear drawings that allow the viewer to fantasize and reflect. She calls her maps “worlds of thought. They are “fictional worlds, continents and universes,” in which she picks apart the structures with which we organize and govern our society. ‘Then I reassemble these as new fictional worlds, making large and complex social systems readable and understandable again.’ The result is a body of work she calls “cartographies of society.

On March 19, 2020, Carlijn Kingma will be a guest at the See All This Studio, will show her work and talk about it. What makes this evening special is that we will work with her on the ‘cartography of a shared world of thought.’ Kingma has put together a workshop especially for this evening: ‘The emphasis this evening will be on looking at art and telling stories, as a kind of alternative audio tour. Maybe we will also make a vignette at the end.’ In addition, Kingma will talk about her own work: ‘about the narrative structures I use in my work, about nonlinear stories, wandering and wonder, illusion and the use of scales.’

Kingma is currently working with Rutger Bregman and the Correspondent on new drawings. For these drawings about interpersonal human relationships, called Human Kind Complexus, Bregman’s Most People Virtue is the starting point. Starting in June, these drawings will be presented in Kingma’s solo exhibition at Rijksmuseum Twenthe.
