The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam is a medium-sized museum for post-war Dutch art. But this was not always the case. The museum’s history goes back to 1899, the year in which Major Visser bequeathed his historical collection to the city of Schiedam, on the condition that a museum would be built for it. In the 1950s, the city council of Schiedam decided that the museum would henceforth focus on ‘currently living artists’ from the Netherlands. Director/curator Pierre Janssen makes his first acquisitions: work by Cobra artists. Since 2016, the historical collection has once again been an important part of the programming.
