Stephen Shore

Huis Marseille | 10/06/2016 - 04/09/2016

American photographer Stephen Shore is known as the chronicler of the everyday and pioneer of colour photography. In the early seventies he photographed unspectacular subjects such as motel interiors, a pancake breakfast, parking lots and dreary crossroads. He photographed in colour, something that was labeled vulgar by icons like Walker Evans (Shore’s role model) and was only done in commercial photography at the time.

He effortlessly switched over from black and white to colour and back, experimented with a variety of cameras and worked in all possible formats. The exhibition covers the period 1960-2013 and provides important turning points in his career. His early work in black and white is also dealt with.
